Downsizing can be overwhelming, so careful planning is crucial.
Whether moving to a smaller home, decluttering, or simplifying your belongings, being aware of common downsizing challenges and strategies to overcome them makes the process more manageable.
Experts share helpful tips to make downsizing less daunting.
Waiting Too Long
Waiting too long to start downsizing can lead to feeling overwhelmed and stressed. It’s vital to gather information and resources early.
“It’s easier to make decisions when you’re not compromised in other ways,” an expert said.
Starting Without a Plan
Jumping into organizing without a plan can be overwhelming. Many people try to start but soon feel out of control or unsure where to begin.
Taking breaks to create mental space, going outside, exercising, or meditating can help you return with a fresh perspective.
Identify "hotspots" that need attention, determine actions for each, and break the project into manageable time-based segments, like decluttering two sections for three hours daily.
Miscalculating Time Expectations
Trying to take on too much too quickly can lead to decision fatigue. Consider your home as an entire project and break it into sections based on what might be more draining or take longer.
“For example, decluttering your pantry will naturally take less time than sorting through piles of sentimental clothing,” an expert noted.
Allocate more time to emotional sections and break your project into time slots based on your comfort level.
“This is a marathon, not a sprint,” the expert added. “Alternate tough hotspots with more straightforward areas.”
Emotional Distractions
Emotional attachment to items can make decision-making harder. Rather than make decisions, people often share an item’s story, which can be time-consuming. Regain focus by asking, “What needs to be done?”
Involving family members can be helpful, but too many people can lead to frustration.
“Be honest with yourself about who you involve. Are they going to distract or be an asset?” the expert advised. “We want this to be a positive process, not feel like an endless list of chores.”
Waiting to Seek Support
Hesitating to seek help can make the process more challenging. It can be empowering to involve people who are not friends or family because they can help without introducing emotional friction.
“What we do is so meaningful because we get the opportunity to become a special part of the lives of those around us, our community,” an expert shared.
Often, professionals start as a trusted realtor or organizer and end up feeling like family.
