Home Maintenance Tips

Owning a home is part of the American Dream. Don't let an unexpected mishap put your home or family at risk. Here are some tips to help you create a healthy and safe environment, so you're free to follow all your dreams.

1. Preventing Kitchen Fires
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Equip your kitchen with a fire extinguisher rated for class ABC fires.

2. Ensuring Electrical Safety
Appliances have varied electrical needs. Avoid overloading outlets or power strips. Unplug small appliances when not in use. Regularly clean the dryer vent and hose, and always clean the lint screen after each use. Use a non-plastic vent hose.

3. Detecting Water Leaks
Water leaks can be subtle. Regularly inspect water sources for leaks. Be cautious not to crimp the water line when moving your refrigerator. Annually check pipes for wear or rust. Monitor your water bill for unexpected increases, which could indicate a leak.

4. Fireplace Maintenance
A wood-burning fireplace adds charm to any room. Learn how to use it safely and maintain both the fireplace and chimney. Clean your wood-burning fireplace and chimney at least once a year, or more frequently with regular use.

5. Installing Smoke Detectors
Children’s rooms should have smoke detectors. Test smoke alarms with your family so they recognize the sound. Make sure everyone knows not to tamper with or disconnect them.

6. Using Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Protect your family from carbon monoxide, the silent killer. Test carbon monoxide detectors with your family so they recognize the alarm sound. Ensure everyone understands not to tamper with or disconnect them.

7. Caring for Your Deck
Proper maintenance, including cleaning and staining, extends your deck’s lifespan. Ensure your deck has railings between 36 and 42 inches high, with rails no more than four inches apart.

8. Safe BBQ Grilling
Only use propane and charcoal grills outdoors. Keep the grill at least 10 feet from your house, deck railing, and combustibles, and away from eaves and overhanging branches. Never leave the grill unattended, and keep children and pets away from the area. Clean your grill by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and trays. For gas grills, check hoses and burners for cracks or leaks.
